ITI CARBON OFFSET PROGRAM

  • Began Corporate Social Responsibility project to reduce carbon footprint
  • ITI invited to the Philippine Greenhouse Gas Accounting and Reporting Program (PhilGARP) in 2007
  • Submitted GHG Inventory Management Plan in October 2007
  • Established baseline CO2 emission level based on 2006 data – 2,881.31 MT
  • Soft launch – April 22, 2008 (Earth Day)
  • September 2008 – signed MOA with El Nido LGU

OBJECTIVE

  • To offset carbon emissions generated by ITI flights

  • To support the watershed rehabilitation project of El Nido town

  • To educate ITI’s partners (i.e. El Nido Resorts, Local Govt, ITI passengers)

HOW THE PROJECT WORKS?

  • Flying ITI produces 126 kg CO2 per seat (19 seater plane)

  • Passengers to donate P200 each to purchase 6 seedlings

  • Seedlings to be planted in Brgy Villa Libertad watershed area

CALCULATION

  • Average of 900 liters Jet A1 fuel consumed round trip (Manila - El Nido - Manila)

  • Conversion factor = 2.52 kg/CO2

  • 2,268 kg CO2 per round trip

  • 126 kg CO2 per seat (19 seats)

  • Adult tropical tree sequestration rate = 22 kg/year/adult tree

  • Minimum trees to plant = 6 trees

VILLA LIBERTAD WATERSHED

  • Total area = 333 hectares

  • Brgy Villa Libertad, Sitio Pasto (80 has), Inigtan (131 has), Batbat (122 has)

  • ITI made a one-time donation of 753 seedlings worth P11,300 and garden hose and 2 water drums

  • ITI will partly fund seedling potting material and salary of forest ranger who used to be a “kaingero” or slash & burn farmer

BENEFITS

  • Sequestration of CO2

  • Protects the water supply of Brgy Villa Libertad

    • Tree roots hold the soil together, soil retains rainwater instead of draining directly into the river

    • Prevents soil erosion

ROLES

  • LGU – monitor barangay compliance

  • Protected Area Office – provide technical advice, survey, protection and monitoring

  • Brgy Villa Libertad – establish watershed, provide manpower to maintain trees

  • ITI – partly fund seedling potting material and forest ranger salary

CURRENT STATUS

  • Initial plan – individual tree planting by interested pax in TKP property

  • April 2008 – soft launch with establishment of nursery at Lio Airport

    • Two tree planting activities conducted

  • Sept 2008 – signed MOA with El Nido LGU

  • Feb 2009 – Brgy. Villa Libertad watershed areas ready

  • March 2009 – 753 seedlings turned over to Brgy Villa Libertad

  • June 18, 2009 – Brgy. Villa Libertad officials together with students from Western Philippines University re-planted 300 seedlings.

  • September 24, 2009, the balance of 387 seedlings were re-planted in Sitio Inigtan.

  • As of end 2009, ITI had already received PhP 79,312.27 in voluntary contributions for ITI’s Carbon Offset program.
